Fang lives in a village in the far north of China, in the land of snow. She helps her parents in the fields, in the kitchen, and takes care of her little brother. Every morning, she watches the children leave for school. She would dream of being like them. So, sometimes, when she goes to the fields, she stops under the school windows and listens to the teacher’s lessons. What she writes on the blackboard, Fang copies it on the white snow.

One day, the teacher notices Fang’s behavior. Stunned by the little girl’s intelligence and determination, the teacher went to Fang’s parents three times to ask them to send their daughter to school. Twice she receives their refusal, but the third is the right one: the father gives in, against the advice of his wife. This is how, at the age of 13, Fang was authorized to join the only primary class in the village.

Of Chinese origin, Zhihong He graduated from Fine Arts in Beijing. She has produced numerous works for young people, illustrated in the great Chinese tradition, on silk or rice paper. At Seuil Jeunesse, she is the author of Why don’t the tiger climb trees? in the collection of ‘Little tales from the carpet’, of My images of China (August 2011), as well as of What are you doing baby? (2014). She lives in Paris.
